Waiting until the crossing note arrives forces a sudden thumb tuck and creates an accent or gap. Your goal for this lesson is clear: Can you hear the crossing with your eyes closed, or does it blend into the surrounding notes?
Prepare the thumb early
In a scale, move the thumb toward its next key before it is needed. Let the arm guide the hand sideways so the wrist does not twist or dip at the crossing.
Use the illustration for “Prepare the thumb early” (C4, D4, E4, F4, G4, A4, B4, C5) to plan the physical move before playing: fingering, hand position, attack, or coordination point. Practise only the transition that changes that plan, and stop if the same movement cannot be repeated comfortably.
Hear chord tones in arpeggios
An arpeggio unfolds a chord over time. Practice its root, third, and fifth as one shape, then connect that shape through different registers with an even tone.

Now take the idea to the keyboard. Loop the three notes around one crossing, then extend outward only when the crossing sounds even.
