Advanced Repertoire

Study a longer-form excerpt through structure, voicing, stylistic detail, and efficient problem-solving rather than repeated full run-throughs.

Temps estimé:10 min6 / 8

Organize a longer excerpt by form, recurring material, and a small number of high-value practice targets.

Repeated full performances consume time without isolating the transition or musical decision that actually needs work. Your goal for this lesson is clear: Can you name the excerpt’s sections and demonstrate the specific transition you improved?

01

Map form and harmony

Label repeated and contrasting sections, cadence points, and harmonic arrivals. Structural landmarks make memory and recovery more reliable.

Mark the opening, turning point, and arrival in the illustration for “Map form and harmony” (C4, D4, E4, G4, F4). Choose the tempo from the least secure transition, then play through the complete shape once before isolating any correction.

Practice by musical problem

Separate rhythm, fingering, balance, pedaling, and transitions. Solve the smallest difficult unit, reconnect its neighbors, then test it in a complete performance.

03

Advanced Repertoire at the keyboard

Now take the idea to the keyboard. Practise two overlapping phrase windows, then connect them through the shared measure.

  1. 1Play the first phrase and stop after its arrival point.
  2. 2Begin one measure before that arrival and play through the second phrase.
  3. 3Join both windows and preserve the planned dynamic direction.
