Rhythm Repertoire

Perform a compact rhythm study that combines sustained notes, rests, and subdivisions without losing the underlying beat.

Geschatte tijd:10 min6 / 8

Keep one underlying pulse audible through long notes, rests, and faster subdivisions in the same piece.

Holding a long note or observing a rest does not pause the beat; only the sound changes. Your goal for this lesson is clear: Can you tap an unchanged pulse through the entire piece, including every held note and rest?

01

Map the rhythm first

Clap the complete piece before playing it. Mark where sounds begin, where they continue, and where silence belongs inside the measure.

Mark the opening, turning point, and arrival in the illustration for “Map the rhythm first” (C4, E4, G4, C5, B4). Choose the tempo from the least secure transition, then play through the complete shape once before isolating any correction.

Keep silent beats alive

A rest is measured silence, not a pause in counting. Continue the pulse internally so the next entrance arrives exactly where expected.

Rhythm Repertoire at the keyboard

Now take the idea to the keyboard. Practise the measure with the greatest mixture of values before playing the complete rhythm study.

  1. 1Count and clap the difficult measure twice.
  2. 2Play it on one repeated key twice.
  3. 3Restore the written pitches and connect it to the neighboring measures.
