Chord Inversions

Recognize a chord even when a note other than the root is in the bass, and choose inversions that create smoother movement.

Tempo estimado:10 min6 / 8

Recognize the chord tones first, then use the bass note to determine which inversion is present.

Naming every new bass note as a new chord hides the shared pitch collection that defines the inversion. Your goal for this lesson is clear: Can you name both the chord root and the bass note without treating them as the same thing?

01

The bass names the inversion

Root position places the root lowest, first inversion places the third lowest, and second inversion places the fifth lowest. The chord name itself does not change.

Group the illustration for “The bass names the inversion” (C4, E4, G4, E4, G4) by shared start times instead of reading it as one long row. For each event, identify the bass note, add the upper notes, and prepare the next vertical change before it arrives.

Move each voice the shortest way

Keep common tones and move the other notes by small intervals. Inversions make progressions easier to play and help each inner line sound intentional.

Chord Inversions at the keyboard

Now take the idea to the keyboard. Play C-E-G, E-G-C, and G-C-E while naming the bass note and inversion each time.

  1. 1Hold any common tones between shapes.
  2. 2Move the remaining voices by the smallest available distance.
  3. 3Listen for the same chord identity under three different bass notes.
