Improvisation and Composition

Create coherent music by setting useful constraints, developing a motive, shaping phrases, and revising what the ear hears.

Create coherence by limiting the musical materials, developing one motive, and revising the result by ear.

Changing every musical element at once makes the answer sound unrelated instead of developed. Your goal for this lesson is clear: Can you identify the original motive inside the finished phrase and name exactly what changed?

01

Begin with one clear constraint

Choose a scale, chord loop, rhythm, or five-note range. A small boundary makes musical decisions easier and gives the result a recognizable identity.

Trace the illustration for “Begin with one clear constraint” (C3, F3, D3, G3, E3) from left to right and identify where the notation rises by step or by leap. Predict the keyboard direction and destination before moving the hand.

02

Develop, record, revise

Repeat the motive, change one feature, and bring back something familiar. Record the result, listen away from the keyboard, and revise the strongest version.

03

Improvisation and Composition at the keyboard

Now take the idea to the keyboard. Build an eight-beat phrase from a three-note motive, then answer it with one controlled rhythmic or contour change.

  1. 1Play and record the original motive.
  2. 2Create an answer that keeps its rhythm or contour, but not both.
  3. 3Listen back and remove any note that does not support the chosen relationship.
