Articulation and Dynamics

Read how notes begin, connect, separate, and change in volume so the score communicates character as well as pitch.

Translate articulation and dynamic marks into an audible plan before the fingers touch the keys.

Changing tempo or accenting random notes can imitate expression without actually following the printed marks. Your goal for this lesson is clear: Can a listener identify both your articulation and dynamic choice without seeing the score?

01

Legato and staccato

For legato, transfer smoothly from one key to the next. For staccato, release the key lightly and immediately without striking from high above the keyboard.

Use the treble example for “Legato and staccato” (C4, D4, E4, D4, E4) to plan the physical move before playing: fingering, hand position, attack, or coordination point. Practise only the transition that changes that plan, and stop if the same movement cannot be repeated comfortably.

02

Dynamics shape direction

Piano and forte are ranges of sound, not single volumes. Crescendo and diminuendo show where a phrase is travelling, so plan the destination before changing the sound.

03

Articulation and Dynamics at the keyboard

Now take the idea to the keyboard. Play C-D-E once legato and softly, then staccato and strongly without changing the tempo.

  1. 1Keep the fingers close for the legato version.
  2. 2Release each key promptly for the staccato version.
  3. 3Compare the recordings and identify which marking is easiest to hear.
